Our Glorious History…

At a time when parents living in Petlad Town and Petlad Taluka were reluctant to send their sons and daughters to distant places like Ahmadabad and Baroda for higher studies, a bobble idea came to the mind of the Late Sheth Shri Ramanlal Keshavlal Parikh that there should be an institution for higher studies in his area. The result was the establishment of “Petlad Education Trust”.

The Trust was set up in 1945 with his personal donation of Rs. 1,00,000/- and the contribution of Rs. 50,000/- from the “Welfare Fund of Rajratna Mill” whose Managing Trustee he was. In the beginning as Sheth Shri Ramanlal Parikh declined to be the president of the Trust, the Late Shri Manibhai Vasanji Desai the then Deputy Diwan of Baroda State, was requested to preside over the Trust. With the guidance and co-operation of Shri Desai and other Trustees, a piece of land measuring 60 Vighas was acquired to set up colleges, hostels, laboratories, staff quarters, playground, etc.

The late Shri Champaklal Chhotalal Parikh, the founder, administrator and educationist of New Education High School, Petlad, was selected as the Secretary of the Trust. Shri Champaklal Parikh in collaboration with another Trustee and the then headmaster of N. K. High School, Petlad, Shri Harilal Ramdas Sheth planned and implemented development projects for the Trust and its institutions. Owing to the efforts of these two great personalities, it became possible to persuade Shri Brojendralal Mittar, the then Diwan of Baroda State, to perform the foundation- stone- laying ceremony of the college building in which the Arts and Science faculties are housed at present. This event happened on 7th December, 1945, and the construction of the college building started in February, 1946. In the same college building, which had been only half- constructed by June, 1946, First Year and Inter Arts classes affiliated to Bombay University were started from 20th June, 1946. Then next year First Year and Inter Science classes were started. With the commencement of Junior and Senior B.Sc. classes in Science Faculty in June, 1948, Faculties for education up to graduate level became available for students.

As institutions for higher education started in Vidyanagar and Nadiad started at about the same time, the strength of the college declined and financial difficulties started cropping up. Meanwhile it became possible to make a provision for education up to the graduate level in Arts Faculty in 1957.

In the beginning graduation with special English and with Gujarati, Economics, Sanskrit, Sociology and Philosophy as General Subjects was introduced. Later in 1960 Economics was introduced as special Subject at the graduate level. In the same year N.C.C. training was introduced in the college with a view to giving military training to the students. In 1964 additional laboratories for Physics and Chemistry were set up with the help of the “U.G.C.” and along with this the institute built up Non – resident Students Center with the help of the U.G.C. making its own contribution. Then in 1967-68 the name of the college was changed into ‘Shri R.K. Parikh Arts and Science College’ in memory of its far- sighted pioneer founder, Rajmitra Datar Shri Ramanlal Parikh and the unveiling ceremony of his statue was performed by the then Education Minister of Gujarat State, Shri Gordhandas Chokhawala.

With the consent of and inspiration from the president of the Trust, Shri Amrutlal Ramanlal Parikh, provision was made for post- graduate studies in Organic Chemistry in Science Faculty in 1969-70.

After the appointment of Shri Indulal Gordhandas Shah as the Secretary of the Trust in 1969 in place of the Late Shri Champaklal Chhotalal Parikh, two institutions named “College of Education” and “Commerce College” were started in 1970 and in this way two more faculties of education were made available to the students’ community in the Silver Jubilee Year.

To satisfy the needs of modern age, the Trust started training in computer science in 1986 with the generous donation from the “Petlad Nagarik Sahakari Bank”. Having developed the training on the same lines, the Trust is running a well – equipped computer center now. Computer courses like D.C.A., T.D.P., Accountancy, are taught at this center.

Students from Petlad Town as well as outside are taking full advantage of the center.When the Trust decided to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, the department of Microbiology was started in 1996 with the generous donation from Shri Rajubhai Patel (now in the U.S.A.) and an arrangement has been made for its laboratory, lecture-halls, etc.

Meanwhile, advised, inspired and blessed by his holiness, “Shri Narayandasji Maharaj of Shri Santaram Mandir” of Nadiad, “Shri Indubhai Maganbhai Patel”, the president of “Sharadaben Indubhai Ipcowala Charitable Trust of Nadiad”, extended his generous helping hand to make the existence of Commerce College and College of Education possible under this Trust. The task of construction of the college building was undertaken under the guidance and active care of “Shri Indubhai Ipcowala”. The “Bhumipujan” ceremony and the “Foundation-Stone-Laying” ceremony were both performed by His holiness “Shri Ganeshdasjji Maharaj (Shri Santram Mandir, Umreth)” on 25th April, 1996. A donation of Rs. 1,00,001/- was received from his holiness “Shri Swami Sachchidanand” of the Trust of the same name. Besides, Shri Ramanbhai Chhotabhai Patel, Shri Dahyabhai Dhoribhai Patel and Shri Bipinbhai Dahyabhai Patel (Canada) made significant contributions to the Trust. The construction of the college building become possible in a short period of eight months. As guided and advised by his holiness, “Mahant Shri Narayandasji Maharaj”, the “Vastupujan” ceremony and “Navchandi Yagna” were performed on Sunday, 8th Mahavad, Vikram Samvat 2053 (2nd March, 1997).

In the Newly-Constructed “IPCOWALA VIDYABHAVAN”, “PATEL SHARDABEN INDUBHAI IPCOWALA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION and “PATEL SHARDABEN IPCOWALA COLLEGE OF COMMERCE” became operational from June 1997. Sheth Shri Ramanlal’s worthy son and the past president of the Trust, Shri Amrutlal Ramanlal Parikh and his worthy son and the present President of the Trust, Shri Vrajeshbhai Amrutlal Parikh, have maintained the ideology and traditions of Shri Ramanlal Parikh, contributing their mite to the development of the institutions.

“Moreover, when the Trust experienced deficit in its financial budget from 1959 to 1962, on account of the increasing maintenance and salary expenses, the teaching staff stood by the Trust by accepting 20% cut in their salaries. The Trust takes a thankful note of their support.”

In 1973 the Trust passed through the most critical period of its history and suffered a heavy loss, because of the students’ and some teaching members’ movement. It took the Trust Ten Years to recover from the loss. The Trust survived the crisis by adopting a noble and magnanimous policy of compromise with them. Thus Petlad College has carved a niche for itself among all the colleges affiliated to Gujarat University.

At present the Trust has for its development spacious open land, residences of Principals, Hostels for boys and Girls, Students’ Community Centre, Playgrounds its own old college building and its newly – constructed building called Vidyabhavan.In various institutions of the Trust, following facilities are available:

1. Gujarati, Economics and Sociology as special subjects and Sanskrit, Psychology, Computer Science as Subsidiary Subjects in Arts Faculty. A Post Graduate center in Gujarati, Sociology and Economics.

2. Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology and Computer Science as special subjects and Math’s, Botany and Computer Science as subsidiary subjects in Science Faculty.

3. Accountancy, Statistics and Management as special subjects and Secretarial Practice, Management, Statistics and Computer Science as subsidiary subjects in Commerce Faculty. A Post Graduate center in Accountancy.

4. Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit, English, History, Math’s, Science, Commercial Arithmetic, Elements of Commerce as methods of teaching in Education Faculty.

Elucidation in English

The college song of Shri R. K. Parikh Arts and Science College, Petlad is composed by the renowned poet Late Shri Ranjitbhai M. Patel “Anami”. He has composed many beautiful songs besides superb metrical poems. We find a perfect fusion of language and feeling in them. Simplicity, sweetness, depth pervades throughout his poems. We all experience all these features of the poems in the college song.

Respected poet ‘Anami’ is closely associated with the college and Petlad town. In the initial stage of the college, he served the college as a lecturer in Gujarati. He has a special love and affinity for the college as well as Petlad. It is reflected in the college song. He has beautifully depicted the region, well known personalities, philanthropist, King Shri Sayaji Rao Gaekwad-the third, the aim and importance of education and the pride of all in a loving and artistic manner.

In the first stanza of the poem the poet refers to the region situated in Charotar which is a fertile land and in which Petlad is a beautiful garden. All the educational institutions are like flowers of the garden. The youth suck the honey of these flowers like honey wasps with enthusiasm.

In the second stanza the shape of Petlad with its industries, literature, art, music, sculpture, architecture, and environment is celebrated. It is a land of abundance which is nurtured by ideal king Shri Sayaji Rao Gaekwad-the third. With goodwill and co-operation of the king great patron Shri Ramanlal Keshavlal Parikh opened the gifts of Goddess of Learning, Maa Saraswati for Petlad township. The poet pays tribute to Late Shri Ramanlal Parikh, philanthropist and donor by referring to him as “Parikh-Moti” – is like a Moti-the jewel.

In the third stanza of the song, the poet tells us how a small spring has transforms itself into a big river like the Ganga with many educational institutions. It is hoped that the knowledge river will ultimately transform itself into a vast ocean with precious pearls and they will bring honour and pride for the society.

The fourth stanza of the song shows us that the aim of education is to sow the seeds of culture in human beings. It has to activate the demented energy in a person. Education has to bless a person with peaceful, healthy, controlled and useful life by which the civilization will progress. This hope is expressed artistically.

In the last stanza, the poet hopes that the students and the teachers will make efforts together to bring out the spirit of education.

          In this way, in the college song praises and honors, education, institution, the founder, Patron, conducive environment of the land, the ruler, ideal teachers and industrious students.

     આપણી શ્રી આર.કે.પરીખ આર્ટ્સ એન્ડ સાયન્સ કોલેજના સંસ્થાગીતના રચયિતા છે સુપ્રસિદ્ધ કવિ શ્રી ‘અનામી’– પ્રો. રણજિતભાઈ મો. પટેલ. તેમણે સરસ છંદોબદ્ધ કાવ્યોની સાથે સુમધુર ગીતો પણ ઘણાં લખ્યાં છે. ભાષા અને ભાવનો આહલાદક સુયોગ તેમાં સધાયો છે. સરલતા, મધુરતા, માર્મિકતા, વિશદતા તેમાં સર્વત્ર અનુભવાય છે. આપણા આ સંસ્થાગીતમાં પણ તેની સૌ કોઈને અનુભૂતિ થઈ શકશે.

કવિશ્રી અનામીનો આપણી કોલેજ અને પેટલાદ નગર સાથે નિકટનો નાતો છે. કોલેજના આરંભકાળે તેમણે આ કોલેજમાં જ ગુજરાતીના પ્રાધ્યાપક તરીકે સ્મરણીય સેવા આપી હતી. અધ્યાપક તરીકેના કૌશલથી અને વ્યક્તિ તરીકેના ઔદાર્યથી તેઓ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ, અધ્યાપકો અને નગરજનોમાં પણ ઘણા લોકપ્રિય થયા હતા. આપણી કોલેજ અને નગર પ્રતિ તેમનાં મમત્વ અને પ્રેમાદરભાવ હરહંમેશ રહ્યાં છે. આ સંસ્થાગીતમાં તેનું સુરેખ પ્રતિબિંબ પડ્યું છે. કોલેજ, તેના સ્થાપક, નગર, પ્રદેશ, તેની વિભૂતિઓ, પ્રજાવત્સલ રાજવી શ્રીમંત સયાજીરાવ ગાયકવાડ-ત્રીજા, શિક્ષણનું લક્ષ્ય–મહત્વ–ગૌરવ સર્વનું તેમાં સ્નેહાસિકત સૂચન અને કલાત્મક નિરૂપણ થયું છે.

ગીતની પ્રથમ કડીમાં પેટલાદ જે ‘ચારુતર’ પ્રદેશમાં આવેલું છે તેનો ‘રસાળ ભૂમિ’ તરીકે અને તેમાં ‘ઉદ્યાન’ સમા સોહંતા પેટલાદ નગરનો નિર્દેશ થયો છે. આ નગર–ઉદ્યાનમાં વિવિધ શૈક્ષણિક સંસ્થાઓરૂપી ફૂલડાં ખીલ્યાં છે. જેમનાં મધુનું રસપાન મકરન્દો-યુવાનો ઉત્સાહપૂર્વક કરે છે.

બીજી કડીમાં ‘વિદ્યા-વિભવે’ ઓપતા પેટલાદ નગરનું, વડોદરા રાજ્યના પ્રજાવત્સલ અને રાજ્યમાં ઉદ્યોગ, સાહિત્ય, કલા, સંગીત, શિલ્પ, સ્થાપત્ય, પર્યાવરણ તમામ ક્ષેત્રે ભરપૂર સ્થાપના – સંરક્ષણ – વિકાસ કરનાર આદર્શ રાજવી શ્રીમંત સયાજીરાવગાયકવાડ-ત્રીજાનું, તેમનાં શુભેચ્છા અને સહયોગથી પેટલાદ નગરમાં અને આસપાસના પરદેશમાં દાનની સરવાણી થકી ‘સરસ્વતીનીલ્હાણ’ કરનાર દાનવીર શ્રી રમણલાલપરીખ ના શુભ નામ સાથે મોતી-હીરો શબ્દ સાંકળી, ‘પરીખ-મોતી’ ના ઉલ્લેખ દ્વારા કોલેજના મુખ્ય દાતાશ્રીનાભાવભીના સ્મરણ થકી તેઓને શ્રદ્ધાંજલી આપવાનો ભાવ વ્યક્ત કર્યો છે.

Elucidation in English

The crest of the College emblematically represents the significance of education in its widest sense. The most prominent features the symbols are the sun rising over the terpsichore waves of the sea of life and a couple of swans sitting just opposite each other at the base containing the Motto “તમસો મા જ્યોતિર્ગમય”.  The sun symbolizes the light of knowledge which removes the darkness of ignorance. The pair of swans which know how to distinguishmilk from water symbolizes the sense of discretion which is necessary for distinguishing between good and evil in the process of learning. The power of removing ignorance, the power of discretion and search for truth (સત્ય-વિદ્યા)as represented by the study Science and Arts – these are the ideals of education which the institution seeks to achieve.

  • વિદ્યાર્થીઓમાં રસરુચિ જાગૃત કરી, તેમની વ્યાવસાયિક કારકિર્દી સફળ બને તે માટે જરૂરી શૈક્ષણિક યોગ્યતા ઘડવી.

Dear Well-wishers,

            Serving the need of quality education, to the boys and girl students from hundreds of families from all class and sects including weaker section and environmentally deprived, at an affordable level has remained a prime aim of the trust.
     Constant efforts are made to equip our institutions and mold their activities to meet the future demand of the education need.The role of this trust is that of a facilitator and guardian. The responsibility of character building and growth is on the shoulders of the faculty and students. Their collective commitment, devotion and integrity will be essential and always appreciated.

            Shri R.K. Parikh Arts and Science College was established in 1946 and affiliated with Bombay University, after that affiliated with Gujarat University,  Ahmedabad from 1949 up to 2015. By virtue of Gujarat State Act, in 2015, college is affiliated to Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar. This college is one of the oldest colleges in the region imparting education in the fields of science as well as arts. College continuously progressing and surge the new peaks of success day to day. University Examinations Results of the various classes also glorious. Some students secured I top ten position in the university rankers frequently. College has accredited by NAAC, Bengaluru with CGPA of 2.61 at B+ grade in the year 2017. College has received Grants of Rs.TWO CRORS from RUSA for construction of new building, rejuvenation of existing building and purchase of Equipments. College also has an active alumni association. Enthusiastic members collect the fund from past students and support to construct Swami Sachchidanand Auditorium Hall which is constructed by beneficence from Swami Shri Sachchidanandji Maharaj, Dantali. Recently college is awarded THREE STARS at GSIRFranking with 2.7 CGPA. College is also planning for accreditation process for third cycle.             I am pleased to cordially welcome everyone to the College website. In the year 1945-46, Petlad Education Trust was the pioneer in founding the institutions of higher education in the middle region of Gujarat State. The institution was the dream of visionary Late Rajratna Sheth Shri Ramanlal Keshavlal Parikh. He had sown the seeds of the missionary zeal in his family for endeavors to ensure the bright future of education in Petlad to match its glorious history. This zeal materialized as “Petlad Education Trust” in 1945-46 and later various faculties of higher education come into existence.

The college was setup with student-centric goals.

  4. Quality has been given utmost importance in the working of the college. To bring in quality in the administrative unit, the college always strives to modernize the office working.

            The college has an excellent infrastructure: Well-maintained building having well-equipped Laboratories as well as Museum; rich library; Computer Center; Digital Education and Learning Laboratory(DELL); Botanical Garden; Central Hall; Ample playground area with different sports equipments; Hostel Facilities for boys; Cold and R.O. drinking water facilities; CCTV cameras, round the clock private security guards, administrative office; and green surroundings.

            The college is committed to excel in teaching and learning, training, capacity-building, entrepreneurship development, scholarship and public services. Apart from classroom teaching, we conduct Seminars, Workshops, Career Counseling and Guidance, students motivated to take part in various extracurricular activities under the umbrella of Science Study Circle, C.W.D.C., N.C.C., N.S.S. and Sports for all round development. The college is equipped with modern state of the laboratories, where students can conduct experiments and do practical classes to convert their dreams into reality. The College has provided each and every village of the area with at least one or more graduate/graduates. This indicates that the Institution is proceeding in the right direction towards its declared goal. All this has become possible owing to the Management; dynamic leadership, devoted teachers and other staff; generous donors, and supports from various financial institutions. The story of this Institution is one of the constant improvements and development. It is indeed the crowning glory of this historic township of Petlad.

            During 2017 college has accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with CGPA of 2.61 on Seven point Scale at B+ grade valid up to      March 27, 2022.

            During 2020-21 College has received Grants of Rs. TWO CRORES from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for construction of New Building, Renovation of existing building and Equipments. With this grant one new building has already constructed for Academic and Extracurricular Activities.

We are enough fortunate to have active and helpful Alumni Association named as “Arts and Science College Petlad Poorva Vidyarthi Mandal”. One auditorium hall named as “Swami Sachchidanand Auditorium Hall” having capacity of more than 700 seating capacity is under construction. Swami Shri Sachchidanandji offered his generous donation of Rs. 21 Lakh for the same. Remaining fund is generated by Alumni Association from past students and well-wishers.    

Recently college is awarded Three Stars at Gujarat State Institutional Ranking Framework (GSIRF) ranking with score 46.14 and CGPA 2.7.
